Why or Why Not Should Students Read
in an era of the internet?
Modern technology, especially the internet, creates a universe of information and fun for us. With smartphones, tablets, and laptops, we can learn whatever we wish to at any given time. Therefore, in the age of new methods of knowledge, is it worth it for students to read books?
There are several reasons why students should still devote time to reading books and developing strong reading skills:
1. Books contribute to better concentration. When reading a book, one cannot just randomly go through content and pick information they like; they need to pay attention all the time to reach the end of the book. This does help to train other critical cognitive skills. Students should be able to focus despite the input content being slightly off, complex, or confusing for them.
2. Print fosters understanding—research evidence indicates that readers understand more when they read hardcopy than when they read on the screen. Feeling a book and flipping through its pages is helpful in learning. The structure of a physical book also strongly aids the readers to naturally orient their position in the text and shift between the sections they have already read and those that they have skipped, as well as visually perceive the overall organization of the physical text.
